How to Choose the Right Chainsaw Chain

How to Choose the Right Chainsaw Chain

Choosing a replacement chainsaw chain starts with the cutting system already approved for your saw. Bar length alone does not identify a compatible chain.

Three measurements to record

1. Chain pitch

Pitch describes the spacing of the chain. Measure the center-to-center distance across three consecutive rivets and divide it by two. The chain pitch must match the saw's drive system and, where fitted, the guide bar nose sprocket.

2. Chain gauge

Gauge is the thickness of the drive link that runs in the guide bar groove. It must match the bar's specified gauge. Do not force a thicker chain into the groove or assume a thinner chain is an acceptable substitute.

3. Drive-link count

Count the drive links, not the cutters. The required count depends on the saw and bar combination; two bars sold at the same nominal length can require different chain loops.

Where to find the specification

Check the guide bar markings, the chain reference and the operator's manual. If markings are unreadable, confirm the exact saw model and bar part number before ordering. Use our chain sizing guide to collect the details.

Confirm the chain family and application

Matching the three measurements is necessary, but it is not a universal fit guarantee. Confirm that the chain type is approved for the saw, guide bar and drive sprocket. Standard 3/8-inch and 3/8-inch low-profile systems should not be treated as interchangeable.

Full-chisel and semi-chisel cutters have different corner shapes. Select the chain using the manufacturer's application guidance and your experience, rather than a simple hardwood-versus-softwood rule.

Before you order or install

Record the pitch, gauge, drive-link count, chain family, saw model and bar reference. Browse OMACK saw chains only after confirming the complete specification. Follow the saw manufacturer's instructions and review our installation and safety guide.
