OMACK / QUICK ANSWERS
Saw chain & guide bar FAQs
Choose the right replacement, check the details before installation, and find help with shipping or after-sales support.
Get fitment helpHow do I choose the correct replacement chain?
Match pitch, gauge, drive-link count and the approved chain family to your cutting system. Start with the guide-bar markings and the chainsaw manual, then use Find Your Chain.
Can I buy any chain labeled for a 16-inch bar?
No. Equal nominal bar lengths can require different pitches, gauges and drive-link counts. Confirm the complete specification before ordering.
What do pitch, gauge and drive-link count mean?
Pitch describes chain spacing. Gauge is the thickness of a drive link where it fits in the bar groove. Drive-link count is the number of drive links around the complete loop, not the number of cutting teeth.
Are 3/8-inch and 3/8-inch low-profile interchangeable?
Do not treat them as interchangeable. Their nominal pitch can be the same while chain family and compatible components differ. Check the chain, bar and drive sprocket specifications.
Should I choose full-chisel or semi-chisel?
Choose from types approved for your saw and experience level. Wood condition, contamination, maintenance and cutting task all matter. Cutter shape alone does not establish low-kickback certification.
Which direction should the cutters face?
On the top run of the bar, sharp cutting edges face forward toward the bar nose, away from the saw body. Confirm against the manufacturer’s diagram before operation. Read the installation guide.
Why does my newly installed chain barely cut?
Stop the saw. Isolate the power source and let the chain cool before checking direction, sharpness, lubrication and compatibility. Do not force the saw into the wood. Seek qualified assistance if the cause is unclear.
Is guide-bar length enough to confirm fitment?
No. Check the exact saw model, mount pattern, tensioner engagement, oil-hole alignment, pitch, gauge and required drive-link count. See our guide-bar fitment guide.
Can I install a longer guide bar?
Only within the chainsaw manufacturer’s approved configurations. A longer bar may require a different chain and can affect handling and power demand.
Can I reuse my chain on a new guide bar?
Only if the replacement configuration requires the same compatible chain specification and the existing chain remains serviceable. The same nominal bar length does not guarantee the same drive-link count.
What if my guide-bar markings are unreadable?
Send the exact chainsaw model, any visible part numbers and clear photos of the bar tail. Additional measurements or a dealer inspection may be needed; a photograph alone does not prove fitment.
