How to Choose the Right Chainsaw Guide Bar

How to Choose the Right Chainsaw Guide Bar

A replacement guide bar must be compatible with the exact chainsaw and the rest of its cutting system. Choosing by bar length or brand name alone is not enough.

Five checks before buying a guide bar

1. Approved cutting length

Use the guide bar lengths approved for your saw model. Nominal cutting length is not the bar's total end-to-end measurement. Read the model-specific manual instead of assuming a longer bar is suitable.

2. Pitch and chain family

The chain and drive sprocket must use a compatible pitch. If the bar has a nose sprocket, that must match too. Confirm the chain family rather than treating standard and low-profile systems with a similar pitch label as interchangeable.

3. Gauge

The bar groove must match the thickness of the chain's drive links. Check the marked gauge; do not rely on appearance.

4. Required drive-link count

The replacement bar may require a different loop length even if it has the same advertised cutting length as the old bar. Confirm the drive-link count for the new saw-and-bar combination.

5. Tail mount

Compare the specified mount pattern with the saw model. The mounting slot, tensioner engagement and oil passages must be compatible. A bar that can be bolted onto the saw is not necessarily a suitable, lubricated installation.

Where to find the details

Record the saw's exact model and the markings or part number near the rear of the existing bar. Check the manufacturer's fitment information. If the reference cannot be confirmed, ask a qualified dealer before ordering or operating the saw.

Choosing a bar type

Laminated, solid and replaceable-sprocket-nose bars differ in construction and maintenance options. Choose an approved bar for the application rather than treating a construction type as proof of fit.

Review the complete combination

Use our guide bar fitment checklist, then compare OMACK guide bars. Check the condition and compatibility of the chain and drive sprocket as well. Do not modify a bar mount to make an unapproved combination fit.

For dealer or workshop purchasing, include the saw model, bar reference, specifications and quantity in a wholesale inquiry.
